SIMA SCHLOSS & LIZZY ALEJANDRO

AMALGAMATION

A collaborative artistic exchange between painter Sima Schloss and photographer Lizzy Alejandro, re-envisions the surrealist game ‘cadavre exquis’ in a truly thought provoking artistic  quid pro quo. Both artists have made careers from thoughtful explorations of the complexities of the human condition; Schloss through her gestual blind contour and collage work and Alejandro through her reclamation of the power of the female body. The figurative ‘gesture’ becomes a commutative framework by which these artists coalesce. Philosopher Maurice Merleua-Ponty once stated, “...not only is the body a historical idea but a set of possibilities to be continually realized.” By engaging with and exchanging their views on the human figure these artists create a richly layered affirmation that the body is more than a vessel, it is a mediated expression of materialized possibilities.

The constraints of traditional photography and painting represent opposing forces, yet, working collaboratively, the artists chose to transcend their personal limitations, supporting the Aristotelian misquote that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”.

Outcomes lie somewhere past caution, Schloss’ paintings and Alejandros’ photographs are presented both as unique works and as collaborations. Their shared vocabulary is brusque and rich with aggressive surface treatments that are both shocking and fresh. This language of physicality acts as an apt vehicle for both artists to reimagine the female body and the society in which it exists.
