Matthew W. Robinson
Benched
Benched is a collection of drawings based on an abstract system of indexing institutional spaces. Researching turn-of-the-century postcards and historic photographs of cavernous armories, gymnasiums and other public gathering spaces, these drawings embrace complex layering and fragmented architecture. Articulating impossible spaces, and tapping into a compendium of childhood memories, Robinson states, “I was interested in solitary activities and was often skeptical of team mentality and energy, yet was fascinated by the cult like fanaticism surrounding athletics.” Focusing on a variety of materials, linear weights, and color washes, these images conjure hues and textures familiar to anyone who has been in a school gym. The process of deconstructing and reconstructing spaces dedicated to athleticism and team spirit is also a visual treatise about winners, losers and the inherent flaws of memory.
