Empty Set Project Space is pleased to present Tapestries of Memory, a solo exhibition by artist Deborah Yasinsky exploring narratives of fear, trauma, mourning, and redemptionWith this installation, she investigates experience and imagination to create surreal, escapist environments which approach past trauma through symbolic intermediaries that illuminate despair and hope. Tapestries recontextualize as a tableau of memory, mourning, and redemptive adoration. They are brought to life through painting, drawing, ceramics, and film, encrusting them in richly layered bejeweled beauty, deeply connected to medieval ornamentation, and layered in symbolism. Birds, unicorns, forest imagery, flattened perspective figures, and jeweled objects immerse across media. Her paintings investigate the inherent joy and fear of motherhood. Yasinsky’s relief carved ceramic vessels of unicorn tapestry motifs act as trees in a forest. The cast-like formations delve into medical experiences and bodily trauma. Her films simultaneously are both a modern memento mori of our time and celebrate the force of life to continue and be reborn.

Deborah Yasinsky is a Bronx based artist, curator, and educator. Recent exhibitions include Coral Gables Museum, Paradice Palase, Local Project Art Space, Dominican University, YU Museum Education Department, and Hot Cabinet.
