Nestor Daniel Perez-Moliere

The Losses, The Heartbreaks, The Hungers…

"Untitled," Digital Chromogenic Print, 2020, 20"x24"

Artist Néstor Pérez-Molière engages in a conversation about mental health and self-compassion with his solo exhibition, The Losses, The Heartbreaks, The Hungers... Focusing on the isolated, psychological space constructed through a claustrophobic framing of the camera, his interactions with himself are revealed and recorded in black and white film. Sometimes abusive, other times tender and intimate, he performs an internal dialogue of mixed nature.

Through this exploration of self as multiple his body becomes a placeholder for an "other;" artist Pérez-Molière is then able to expand the notion of self-portraiture and scrutinize homosocial relationships. He complicates the power dynamic through interactions with himself using imagery that accentuates both shadows and the light.  The artist states, “ I use my self-portraits as a tool for catharsis, as a way of dealing with my own mental health issues”.  This body of work crafts a queer space that accounts for depression and shame as an entry into discussions about contemporary queer culture and homosocial relationships. The Losses, The Heartbreaks, The Hungers..., is on view throughout the month of June promising to engage the viewer and generate a conversation about mental health.
