Patrick Perry
Reliquus

March 7th to March 29th
Opening Reception: Saturday March 7th 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm

Empty Set is pleased to showcase the work of Patrick Perry in its inaugural exhibition Reliquus. Described as a non-linear visual narrative of how art makes art, Reliquus, an installation of art and text pays homage to artists that have impacted the life and work of the artist. Relying heavily on a variety of media - photography, printmaking, metalworking and sculpture the artist engages with his own constructed memory of art and art making in an attempt to create a visual hypomnemata.

Perry states, “I have always been a maker.  I am a jeweler by trade but also a sculptor, photographer, and installation artist who is drawn to visual narratives and inherent materiality.  With Reliquus I am reaching back in history to explore a technique exercised by the Greeks called hypomnemata.  Michal Foucault in an essay entitled, “Self-Writing”, from his book Ethics: Subjectivity and Truth describes the hypomenmata as a practice of creating and preserving the memory of things that have been seen, heard and read.  Reliquus can be viewed as an introspective, distinct and personal installation allowing viewers a glimpse into the world that has shaped who I am.  It acts as an installation of accumulated experiences.  For me, the act of making this work was an act of conversing, connecting.”
