Pink Hotel

SArah Ellen Rowe

July 30 - August 28

Opening Reception: Saturday, July 30, 2022 at 4:00PM
Closing Party: Saturday, August 20, 2022 at 4:00PM

This August, Empty Set presents the exhibition Pink Hotel, a series of new ceramic sculptures by Sarah Ellen Rowe exploring abstracted architectural forms. Inspired by the work of M.C. Escher and Ricardo Bofill’s apartment complex, La Muralla Roja, Rowe articulates architectural models that are metaphysical expressions of their materiality. Diminutive with pastel surfaces, it is the smallness of the models that translates the hard grandeur of full-scale structures into softened states, dislodged from the laws of gravity and physics. Stairs, arches, ladders and portals are arranged in labyrinthine configurations. Rowe conjures otherworldly settings, elemental futuristic spaces and kitsch with the aid of lights embedded within the sculptures.

Sarah Ellen Rowe is an artist based in New York City.  Rowe has participated in The Bronx Museum of Art’s AIM Fellowship, The Art & Law Program, and was a Create Change Fellow with The Laundromat Project. Rowe holds an MFA from Lehman College, 2013 and a BA from the College of the Holy Cross, 1998. The exhibition dates are July 30th to August 28th. The opening reception will take place on Saturday, July 30th from 4-6pm.  There will be a closing party on Saturday, August 20th from 4-6pm.   Pink Hotel will be on view through August 28th at Empty Set, 860 E. 136th Street, #10D, Bronx, NY. The exhibition can be viewed in person by appointment. Email or DM for an appointment.
