HETEROTOPIA

Sohhee Oh

August 15-30, 2020

Empty Set is pleased to present Heterotopia by Sohhee Oh. This installation responds to the time before social distancing while conjuring collective nostalgia for the metropolis and the density of city living. The artist articulates the pre-COVID expanse of time to the present as an ever-widening exponential chasm. The experience of being physically close through the movements of quotidian life has transformed into a daydream of reluctance, fear, discomfort and the uncanny. As humans require constant interaction -  former patterns of life are a mere reverie, an airy daydream of the crowd.

Sohhee Oh’s installation investigates the small tears in the fabric of our collective perceived reality, allowing others to engage with the everyday through the lens of a heterotopia, experiencing a self-contained place detached from the surrounding world.
